reasons to be cautious
MONEY AND RELIGION CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS
We rarely talk about money at Riverside, but budgets for ministry require it sometimes. We look to Jesus's teaching when we do.
In order to avoid problems sometimes cause by money and religion, the pastor is not involved and has no idea who gives what.
Contributions, small or large, give no privilege or access to power, or control in decision making in this church. (James 2:1-9)
our approach
GRACE NOT PERFORMANCE
(1) Make a personal plan (each one must give as s/he has made up her/his mind)
(2) Not out of guilt, to earn prestige or power in the church, or to bargain favor with God (not reluctantly or under compulsion)
(3) But with a sense of God's love (for God loves a cheerful giver)
(4) Give according to your means, whether little or much. The heart more than the amount matters.
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, "Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on." (Luke 21:1-4)
